Large jazz ensemble (18-piece). For such a large group, note-perfect
accuracy is necessary so that music can be read down correctly the
first time. Page turns are considered, long rests or tricky sections
are cross-cued, explanatory notes. See the score
excerpt and parts for alto sax 1, trumpet 1, trombone 1, and bass. The drum
part is key; drums usually improvise most of what they play, and
need a good guide rather than explicit parts. Too much detail and the
player loses the big
picture, not enough can cause them to get lost or play something
inappropriate. I've received unsolicted compliments from many drummers
on the quality of my drum parts.
Vocal lead sheet, a style small jazz combos
prefer. These charts are written out in a very minimalistic style with
only chords, melody, and lyrics. Overall form is only usually indicated
by a textual outline. This gives musicians maximum flexblity in
improvising not only solos, but the complete form.

Exercises
Flute Five-Note Exercises helps you
develop technique
on flute (or any woodwind instrument for that matter) by breaking
common patterns
down into hexachords (the first five notes of a major or minor scale).
This particular one has been written out for the common range of flute.
However, they are easy to memorize and are excellent warm-ups on all
instruments.
Two/Five Exercises runs through a ii/V
progression in all major keys. The range is written out for any
saxophone. I'll be extending this as I get time to include minor keys,
and other variations.
